Virginia Giuffre — one of the bravest voices against Jeffrey Epstein and Prince Andrew — has died by suicide at the age of 41, her family confirmed in an emotional statement to PEOPLE.

Virginia passed away on Thursday, April 24, at her home in Neergabby, Australia, where she had been living for the past several years.

“Virginia lost her battle with the pain caused by a lifetime of sexual abuse and trafficking,” her family said. “She was a fierce warrior — a true light for so many survivors. Despite everything she endured, she kept shining. She was a proud mother to Christian, Noah, and Emily, and they were the center of her universe.”

“It was the moment she first held her daughter that Virginia decided to fight back — not just for herself, but for every victim who had been silenced. Words can’t express how broken we are. She was a hero. In the end, the weight of it all became too much.”

Virginia’s longtime attorney, Sigrid McCawley, added, “Virginia wasn’t just a client; she was my friend and a true fighter. Her strength inspired me every single day. The world lost a real angel today.”

What Happened

The Western Australia Police confirmed they responded to a call at Virginia’s home and found her unresponsive. Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said early signs suggest her death is not suspicious, but investigations are ongoing.

Her death comes after a rough start to 2025. In late March, Virginia posted from a hospital bed on Instagram, revealing she had been in a serious car crash involving a school bus, which led to kidney failure. Doctors had told her she had just days to live.

In early April, Virginia also spoke out about experiencing domestic violence in her marriage to her husband of 22 years, Robert Giuffre. She filed a police report in January 2025 but no charges were made. Her family later confirmed Virginia had separated from Robert in mid-2023.

A Life of Courage

Virginia’s life changed forever at just 16 years old when she was recruited by Ghislaine Maxwell to work for Jeffrey Epstein. She later revealed she was trafficked to powerful men, including Prince Andrew — allegations the prince has always denied.

Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking.

Though Virginia wasn’t part of Maxwell’s trial, she celebrated the guilty verdict, calling it a major victory for survivors everywhere.

In 2021, she sued Prince Andrew, accusing him of sexually abusing her when she was underage. They settled out of court in early 2022. Though the amount wasn’t disclosed, the lawsuit brought global attention to the case.

In a famous 2019 BBC interview, Prince Andrew denied ever meeting Virginia, even bizarrely claiming he couldn’t sweat at the time due to a medical condition. He later stepped back from royal duties following public outrage.

Virginia never gave up her fight for justice. She later founded SOAR (Speak Out, Act, Reclaim) — a nonprofit organization helping survivors of sexual assault reclaim their lives.

Remembering Virginia

Virginia’s spokesperson, Dini von Mueffling, said: “Virginia was extraordinary. She was loving, wise, and hilarious. She was a beacon for survivors. Representing her was one of the greatest privileges of my life. I will miss her deeply.”
