DC Universe Updates: The Penguin Season 2 in Question, Swamp Thing Paused, and More

James Gunn and Peter Safran have recently shared the latest news on several upcoming DC projects, including updates on Swamp Thing, the fate of The Penguin Season 2, a new Teen Titans movie, and additional exciting developments.

Swamp Thing Update

Originally announced in 2023, the Swamp Thing project appears to be on hold at the moment. Director James Mangold is currently occupied with his Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. “We talk about it occasionally,” Gunn revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, indicating that while the project remains in discussions, it isn’t moving forward right now.

The Penguin Season 2: Uncertain Future

Fans have been buzzing about the possibility of a second season of HBO’s The Penguin. Despite ongoing chatter, a follow-up hasn’t been officially confirmed. Director Matt Reeves has hinted at potential story developments, but Safran has been cautious, stating that it’s still uncertain whether Season 2 will materialize. “There are a lot of moving pieces — probably most important is Colin [Farrell] himself,” Safran explained. Gunn added a light-hearted note, quipping about the production challenges: “And 800 pounds of makeup.”

Teen Titans Movie in Development

In other news, the Teen Titans movie is in the works, with Ana Nogueira at the helm of the script. Safran mentioned that the screenplay isn’t finalized yet, while Gunn praised Nogueira for her passionate work on the project. “She turned over an amazing script for us,” he noted, emphasizing that the script is still being refined and isn’t ready for prime time.

New Deathstroke/Bane Project

Safran also confirmed that Matthew Orton is currently writing a script for a project that could blend elements of Deathstroke and Bane. This new development, first reported in September 2024, promises to add another layer to the evolving DC narrative.

Additional DC Projects: Paradise Lost and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Production continues on the Wonder Woman prequel series Paradise Lost, while Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is now about halfway through production. Fans can mark their calendars, as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is slated for release on June 26, 2026.
